Chartered in 1932

Soroptimist International of Greater Victoria was chartered on March 21st, 1932, sponsored by SI Vancouver. We continue to be an active service club of business and professional women addressing a variety of issues of particular significance to women and girls. We welcome other like minded women who share our dream of helping women to be their best.

Our Mission:

‘to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world.’

Soroptimists inspire action and create opportunities to transform the lives of women and girls through a global network of members and international partnerships.   By helping women to improve their own lives we also have a positive influence on their families and communities…a perfect win-win situation.  Check out our Facebook page, Soroptimist International Greater Victoria.

Meetings:  We meet the first Tuesday each month (September to June) at the Ross Place, 2638 Ross Lane,Victoria.   Arrive at 5:45 pm the meeting starts at 6pm. Good food and good fellowship are key as we work together on a variety of projects. Some meetings also feature a guest speaker.

What we Do:  Our major charity donation is to Cridge Transition House for Women. We supply New Beginning Hampers for each woman to help re-establish a safe home on her own.  We have also purchased kitchenware for the Transition House.  This has been possible through gaming grants.

We also sponsor a Bridge Lunch Social with corporate support from Parkwood Place Retirement Residence on Shelbourne Street.  Over $5000 has been raised for our awards and grants to local charities. Look for announcements of the next one scheduled each spring and fall.  With this funding we locally offer a Violet Richardson Award and a Women’s Opportunity award (www.soroptimist.org) .   Internationally, we donated to Project Sierra (www.projectsierra.org) and to the Haiti disaster relief fund.

In recent years we have supported:

Bridges for Women Society’s 2009 Alumni Career Exhibition; Christmas gifts and hampers for Single Parent Resource Centre families; kitchenware for Sandy Merriman House; horse blankets to Victoria Riding for Disabled; Fernwood Best Babies program and donations to PEERS Victoria Resources Society and the Citizen’s Counselling Centre when they experienced funding cutbacks.

We offer opportunities for members to participate at various levels; in fundraising efforts, club socials, hands on projects and learning from guest speakers and from other Soroptimists in our club.  We also meet and form friendships with Soroptimists from other regions and countries, all working toward similar goals of helping other women to be their best.

You should like to eat well and laugh a lot to be a Soroptimist and especially  want to make a positive difference for women, helping them achieve their dreams.  Membership is by invitation and interested women are welcome to attend one or more meetings, getting to know us and share ideas, challenges and inspiration.
