Motion M-47

Some of you may have received a request for support from MLA Viersen but in the event you have not, I am forwarding this information for your consideration. Soroptimist International of Edmonton will be writing a letter for them and the more they get, the more the issue will be recognized. It is an important first step.

Good afternoon,

As the MP for Peace River – Westlock, I am contacting you regarding Motion M-47 that I have introduced in the House of Commons on youth and sexual violence online. The policy implications of M-47 are very closely aligned to the work and advocacy of Soroptimist International Club of Edmonton to improve the lives and human rights of women and girls.

Motion M-47 states:
That the Standing Committee on Health be instructed to examine the public health effects of the ease of access and viewing of online violent and degrading sexually explicit material on children, women and men, recognizing and respecting the provincial and territorial jurisdictions in this regard, and that the said Committee report its findings to the House no later than July 2017.

If this motion is adopted by the House of Commons, it would require the Standing Committee on Health to conduct a study on the impact of violent sexual content online on youth and adults. A Parliamentary study would allow for a broad spectrum of stakeholders to be involved in developing future policy on this important issue.

M-47 already has the support of victims and child advocacy organizations such as Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime, Rehtaeh Parsons Society, London Abused Women’s Centre, and the Joy Smith Foundation.

M-47 is scheduled to be debated and voted on this fall and I would be honoured to have the support of Soroptimist International Club of Edmonton through a letter of support or statement.

I have attached a few documents regarding M-47. If you have any questions or require any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.
