Governor’s Message – Dana

governorGreetings from the Governor # 2

Well the year is off to a great start. The board and region chairs have finalized the Strategic plan and we are starting the planning for the Region conference in May.  This plan is our road map for the next two years. We have some big goals!

Some of you may have heard me talk about F.U.N. FUN stands for:

          • Friendship
          • Understanding
          • New Directions

Soroptimist is all about friendship whether it’s at the club level, the region level, or internationally.  This organization fosters friendship. I recently posted a story on our web page that shows just how far friendship links extend. In this case it was life saving. If you haven’t seen it here is the link.

When I think about understanding I think about being kind to each other, respecting each other, and supporting each other.  Understanding also means being tolerant when others differ in opinions. When we are understanding we are wise!

Finally, new directions is about being open to change. Change is hard, but in order for us to keeping moving forward we have to be responsive to change.

I shared this illustration with SI of the Langley’s at a recent club visit. Imagine you are driving your car. But instead of looking out the windshield you keep your eyes glued to the rear view mirror. You can imagine the chaos if we all drove this way. It’s the same with Soroptimist. It’s ok to glance at the rear view mirror every so often, but we will get to where we need to go faster, and easier if we look forward.

I started off talking about our region goals. Here are some of them:

  • 100% participation in the Women’s Opportunity Award
  • 100% participation in the Violet Richardson Award
  • 100% of clubs will participate in the SIA President’s Challenge

Please help us achieve these goals. These awards change women’s and girl’s lives dramatically.  We need all clubs to participate.

PS Have you heard about the Governor’s Win Big Contest. It’s on the website! I hope you will enter often.

Greetings From Governor Dana

Maya Angelou said  “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some humor, some compassion and some style.”

When I think about these words I am reminded of Soroptimist. Soroptimist truly is vibrant organization that thrives on the passion of women all over the world. Women like you who have hearts that beat with compassion for those not as fortunate as ourselves.

We are a community like no other. We cry, we laugh, and we work hard to improve the lives of women and girls.

But you know what is so fabulous we as Soroptimist’s can go to Brazil or Japan, to Winnipeg, or Courtenay, to Philadelphia, or Washington and immediately find our people. And in that moment of meeting all that matters is that we are here, that we are together, that we have a common purpose that unites us.

And that is my message to all of you. We are here, we are together, and we truly are Best for Women.

My goal over the next two years is to promote the building of this great community. So that instead of whispering Soroptimist we will shout it out and let the world know how great we are. Our most precious resource is you – our members and what you have and want to give. Each of you have within yourself a unique combination of talents and abilities. If we come together we will be able to achieve any goal that we set.

The common denominator of women who achieve great things is a sense of destiny. It is not a coincidence that you are here today.  Soroptimist’s are women who are willing to make the world a better place.

I want the way I live my life to make a difference. I know that you want that for yourself as well. Our work is significant, because we make the world a better place to live, and our work has a long lasting impact on the lives of many. So, I am asking you to reach out like never before and grab hold of our destiny. Use the passion you have to motivate you to take action and make a difference in the lives of women and girls.

Let’s join together to help women be their best by helping them to Live their Dream.

And along the way, take care of each other, laugh a lot, and enjoy the ride because it just gets better and better.

Sincerely,

Dana Martin
Governor, Western Canada Region

P.S.

Please contact a club in your area and make a difference for women and girls in your local community and throughout the world.
